The answers that change: president, governor, your senators

Most citizenship answers stay the same for years. Eight do not. These depend on who holds office right now or on where you live, so you check them close to your interview date.

The four national answers

Four answers change when officials change: the President, the Vice President, the Speaker of the House, and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. When any of these people leave office, the correct answer changes with them. USCIS publishes the current answers at uscis.gov/citizenship/testupdates.

The four answers based on your state

Four more depend on where you live: your state capital, your governor, one of your two U.S. senators, and your U.S. representative. Your representative depends on your district, not just your state, so two people in the same state can have different correct answers.

Your state capital does not change, but the officials do. Look up your current governor, senators, and representative before your interview. You can find them through your state government website or usa.gov.

A note on some states

If you live in a U.S. territory, or in Washington, D.C., some of these answers work differently. For example, D.C. and territories do not have voting U.S. senators. Read the current USCIS guidance for your situation.

Keep it simple

Write down your eight current answers and review them with the rest. Because they change, do not rely on an old study sheet. Confirm them again in the week before your interview.

You can save your state and officials once, and see your own answers filled in across every question, stored only on your device.

Citizenship Answers is an independent study aid and is not affiliated with USCIS. Always confirm current answers on the official USCIS website.
