You pass the 2025 civics test by answering 12 of 20 questions correctly. The officer asks the questions one at a time and stops as soon as you reach 12. That means a strong start can end the civics portion early.
The questions are spoken, in English, during your interview. There is no multiple choice and no written civics section. You listen, then answer out loud.
What counts as correct
You give one correct answer per question. Small grammar mistakes are fine as long as the officer understands your meaning. If a question accepts several answers, any one accepted answer counts. You do not lose points for extra words, but keep answers short and clear.
If you miss too many
If you answer six wrong before reaching 12 correct, you do not pass that day. You get a second chance. USCIS reschedules you, usually within 60 to 90 days, and you retake only the part you failed. Many people pass on the second try.
The other parts have their own passing rules
Reading: you read one sentence out loud correctly, out of up to three tries. Writing: you write one sentence the officer dictates, out of up to three tries. Both use short official vocabulary lists, so practice those exact words.
How to be ready
Aim higher than 12 in practice. If you can score 16 or more out of 20 at home, interview day feels easier. Focus your review on the questions you miss most, and say answers out loud so the words come quickly.
