Failing a part of the test on your first try is not the end. USCIS gives you a second chance. You retake only the part you failed, not the whole interview.
The second interview
If you do not pass the civics test, the English reading test, or the English writing test, USCIS schedules a second interview. It usually falls within 60 to 90 days of the first one. At the second interview, you are tested only on the part or parts you failed the first time. Many people pass on the second try.
What happens after two tries
If you do not pass the second time, USCIS denies that application. You can file a new N-400 and try again after you prepare more. A denial for the test is not permanent. It means you need more study before the next attempt.
Why people fail, and how to avoid it
The most common reasons are studying silently instead of out loud, and not confirming the answers that change. The test is spoken, so practice by speaking. Check the current President, governor, senators, and other changing answers before you go.
Prepare so one part does not surprise you
Do not only study civics. Practice reading sentences out loud and writing dictated sentences by hand. Take full 20-question practice runs so the format feels familiar. If you can score well above 12 at home, the real test has less pressure.
